Why VO2max is considered a key marker for performance today
A large, long-term study from Denmark, which examined thousands of people over many years, found that tennis players live an average of up to 9.7 years longer than people with an inactive lifestyle. Racket sports also perform particularly well compared to other sports. In the same study, activities such as cycling, swimming, or jogging significantly lagged behind tennis and badminton when it came to the correlation with a higher life expectancy.
The reason for this probably lies in the unique combination of physical activity, mental challenge, and social interaction that racket sports offer. Precisely this mix is now considered particularly valuable for a long and healthy life. Studies show that participation in racket sports such as tennis, badminton, and squash significantly reduces the risk of all-cause mortality by 47% and the risk of cardiovascular disease mortality by 59%.
The health benefits of racket sports result from several factors that act simultaneously during play. In tennis or padel, the entire body is in motion. Players accelerate, brake, change direction, and react to the ball. This simultaneously trains endurance, strength, coordination, and speed. This form of full-body workout strengthens the heart, muscles, and metabolism and improves overall fitness in the long term.
At the same time, racket sports act like natural interval training. The short rallies alternate with short breaks, similar to high-intensity interval training. This trains the cardiovascular system particularly effectively, which can reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases in the long term. Studies even show that regular playing of racket sports is associated with a significant reduction in the risk of cardiovascular deaths.
In addition to the physical effects, the brain and nervous system also benefit. When playing, movements must be anticipated, decisions made in seconds, and new strategies constantly developed. This combination of movement and cognitive activity can help maintain mental performance and counteract age-related decline.
Another important factor is the social component. Tennis and padel are almost always played with other people. Studies show that precisely this social interaction plays a decisive role for long-term health and quality of life. Sports with social contact are particularly strongly associated with a higher life expectancy.
This combination of movement, brain training, and social activity makes racket sports an ideal longevity sport.
As healthy as tennis and padel are, they also place high demands on the body. The rapid changes in direction particularly strain the knees, ankles, and hips. Especially on hard courts, high forces act on the joints with every sprint and stop.
Tendons and muscles are also heavily stressed. Typical complaints among tennis players include, for example, the so-called tennis elbow or shoulder overuse. Especially with intense exertion, the Achilles tendon or forearm muscles can also be affected.
Another central factor is the stability of the core. The core plays a crucial role in tennis and padel for hitting power, balance, and movement stability. Weak core muscles increase the risk of overuse and injuries. Many complaints therefore arise not from the sport itself, but from a lack of stability or insufficient regeneration.
Those who regularly play racket sports should therefore not only support their performance but also target their joints, tendons, and muscular stability.
Evage was developed to help active people pursue their sport healthily in the long term.
Evage Flex specifically supports joints, tendons, and cartilage and promotes flexibility. Especially in sports like tennis or padel, where rapid changes in direction and repeated stress affect the joints, targeted support can help maintain flexibility and resilience in the long term.
Evage Elevate complements this approach by supporting muscle stability, regeneration, and energy production. Stable core muscles are crucial for control, hitting power, and injury prevention on the court.
The combination of Evage Flex and Evage Elevate therefore offers comprehensive support for players of racket sports. It supports joint protection, stability, and regeneration and helps to play tennis or padel performantly and healthily in the long term.
